Why is Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Important?

Since prehistoric times until today, plastic surgery has been an inseparable companion of the human condition, regardless of the societal norms of the time. It has constantly evolved despite differences in culture, genetics, religion, geography, and history. Cosmetic surgery is not a modern phenomenon. In fact, it has a long history. Seeking beautification throughout history has been intrinsic to our being. Primitive African Nubian tribes scarified the body to create artistic skin keloids (Fig. 1, Tom Rees, Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, p14, 1980). Other societies created desirable shapes of the head and feet in children using tight bandages.

People were driven to drastic surgical treatments long before the establishment of anesthesia, aseptic principles, and even refined surgical instrumentation.  The shifting standards of beauty continue to evolve. In Hellenistic times, compression binding of the chest to induce smaller breast development was popular. Before the 1950s, small breasts were rarely considered a problem requiring enlargement ( Fig. 2, Three Graces, Peter Paul Reubens 1635). Now, a mere  70 years later, breast augmentation is the most commonly performed cosmetic  procedure worldwide according to 2018 yearly  statistics of the American Society of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeons.

In modern times, cosmetic surgery is ubiquitous because it is safe, almost pain free, affordable, and has a short recovery time. Minimally-invasive procedures such as Botulinum Toxin Type A injection, tissue filler injection, chemical peel, and laser treatment are practiced daily with increasing demand. Unfortunately, bogus advertisement concomitantly flourished too. Whether you are interested in surgical or in minimally-invasive treatment, a trusted board-certified plastic surgeon is best qualified to help you choose your optimal option.
